Insincerity in Business
“…No I would not like a cupcake with that”
I would not like a cupcake with that, thank you. I have been to this coffee shop for 2 years and never have I ordered a cupcake with my coffee. Why should this day be any different. The waitress is the same, in fact all the waitresses are the same from all of the coffee shops I frequent close to work, and each one asks me whether I would like a cupcake with my coffee, each day, about 3 times a day.
I carefully decline each time with a smile and a “thank you”.
Cupcakes are the icing on what is a vast cupcake of insincerity I experience in my life working in a little shop, in a little village in the North of London.
It seems every time the phone rings, I will have to put on my business persona and deflect all seemingly genuine attempts of endearments from some random person in another very distant city.
I am aware of rapport and its necessity in day to day business interactions. I am also aware, unlike some, that it is a contradiction. Sincerity is ineffable and unquantifiable, once it becomes a conscious act, qualified as something such as “rapport” - it is nullified. And a good thing to.
We should do good acts on the back of good motives, on the back of good turtles that each stand upon the back of an even greater and gooder turtle.
